Organ2/ASLSP (As Slow as Possible) is a piece of music that started being performed in 2001 and isn’t set to end until the year 2640! It was written by the experimental composer John Cage in 1987. When he wrote the piece it didn’t say how long it should last for.
In 1997 a group of people decided to take Cage’s score to the extreme and make the longest ever performance of a piece of music by playing it very slowly. They built a specially designed organ and placed it in St. Burchardi’s church in Halberstadt, Germany.
The whole performance of Organ2/ASLSP will take 639 years to complete!
The last note was played in 2013, and next note will be played on the 5th September 2020.
